My parents have always told me that Harvard , Yale and Princeton are the big schools to get into. They mention some others too. I have a straight A average but I am a little shy and some say kind of a nerd. What can I do to increase my WOW factor?

Good afternoon! I appreciate your interest in building your "Wow Factor". It's good to see that you are aiming high. Getting into Ivy League universities is a wonderful opportunity in and of itself. Here's some helpful information on building your "Wow Factor":
Get involved in meaningful extracurriculars: Many universities are interested in applicants who have deep commitments to certain extracurriculars. This could be a sport, a club or a community service activity. However, it must be something you are very passionate about. Having extracurriculars like these will help top tier universities get an idea of your personality, character and interests.
Be a superior student: In addition to extracurriculars, having exemplary grades throughout high school is one of the many important factors Ivy League and elite universities take into consideration. Ways you can do this are by studying hard, ensuring you complete assignments on time, asking questions when you are confused on subjects and taking advantage of extra-credit. Also, a way to increase your GPA is by taking honors and AP (or IB) courses. These particular courses earn you more points on your GPA than regular classes. I recommend you start taking honors courses now and begin to take AP classes your sophomore year.
SAT/ACT: Though some of the Ivy League and elite universities are test optional, more and more are requiring the submission of standardized test scores. It is important that you start studying early. I recommend that you use Khan Academy to help you practice SAT questions, take SAT/ACT practice tests and go over practice test questions by watching SAT/ACT practice test walkthroughs on Youtube. I recommend that you take both tests once and then determine which test is easier for you. Next, you will focus your efforts towards mastering that specific test. Remember, that you can submit either the SAT or ACT. It doesn't have to be both.
Take note of your life experiences: Your life experiences are very crucial to your identity and make up who you are. It's important to take into account everything you have experienced because it will help give these universities a sense of how your upbringing and/or high school experience has influenced your identity and aspirations.
I appreciate that you are taking an interest in the college admissions process early. You are never too early to prepare. I am confident that you will succeed in getting accepted to Ivy League and elite universities. Continue to keep up the good work and continue to dream big!
