Our Mission
Creating Impact
We are committed to protecting the representation and inclusion of African American students in higher education. Moreover, we are committed to protecting ALL students (regardless of race) from unfair discrimination and disenfranchisement in higher education. We also welcome people of all races to join our organization in this fight for justice and fairness. That said, black people are the group of people who are currently being unfairly singled out by many of the laws, rules and initiatives being put forward by the current President, his administration and the Supreme Court; thus, the primary focus of this organization is on African American students and their fight for justice, fairness and equity in accessing higher education. For hundreds of years, black people have struggled to obtain equal educational opportunities because of racism. Laws like Affirmative Action were meant to aide black students and other students of color - making it possible for them to obtain higher education where previously those opportunities had been discriminatorily kept away from them. In other words, those laws were meant as a remedy to address purposeful and systemic injustice with respect to black students and their pursuit of higher education. However, the Supreme Court recently eliminated those laws; deeming "race" cannot be considered in the admissions process. This has caused many black students to become reticent and unsure about how to apply for college... also making them unsure of where and what resources are available to aid in their pursuits. We are here to help! Our organization firmly believes that race (particularly for minority groups) is, sadly but realistically, a part of the day to day lives of people who live in America... and is certainly a part of the day to day lives of many African Americans who, oftentimes, have to fight for justice and fairness in many aspects of day to day life in America. To take that whole experience away... to not be able to factor in the larger hill that many black people have had to climb just to get to the same destination, is patently unfair and largely discounts the human, day to day life experience endured by the African American college applicant. In response to the uncertainty of this time, we will provide a support system for African American students (and any student of any race who needs help) and consult with them about how best to approach applying to college (now that race cannot be considered) through ways where they can still represent who they are and still abide by all laws without reproach from any college, the President of the United States, the Supreme Court and/or any court across this country. Also, this platform and the services we provide will attempt to support and encourage black students emotionally by emphasizing that there is hope in this time of uncertainly and ambiguity. The dream of ALL people to reach their higher educational pursuits, and the dreams of American Americans in pursuing higher education, is still very much within reach; together, we just have to find ways to support each other and skillfully navigate around laws that are meant to marginalize and/or oppress us. We will get there... brick by knowledge based brick. The thirst in our dreams is too strong to let the bitter water of injustice quinch our desires.
The BlackUp Plan
We encourage African American high school students to become leaders in their communities and make a change in the world . Through this network you will be connected to other like minded individuals and create solutions to the problems concerning the education of African Americans.
We are a resource that helps African American students find funding sources so that they can achieve higher education. When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Affirmative Action it made it much more difficult for African American students to pay for college. Through collaborative efforts and extensive research, the AA DHE helps to find free sources of funding to help pay for their education.
We encourage African American students to be the best they can be academically. With our academic resources and connections, students can find the help they need in pursing academic excellence in high school, college and beyond.
We strive to have African American students stand out in a way that represents who they are and frame their uniqueness in such a way as to be more appealing to colleges and universities . Using the Black Up Plan, we will help African American students to represent their qualifications, background and experience to college admissions committees.
